Vinyl Plank Flooring vs Laminate Flooring: What’s the Difference?

April 10, 2023

Both vinyl and laminate flooring are some of the most popular flooring options on the market!
They are an excellent option for homeowners who want the look of hardwood while staying cost-effective.

But what are the differences between the two? Floor Trendz is here to look deeper at the two and help you decide which is best for you!

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl plank flooring is made of PVC, a type of plastic. It is an excellent option in high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms because of its durability and moisture resistance.

The patterns of LVT and LVP are created by 3D imaging technology, creating a realistic look. There are also options for vinyl sheet flooring or vinyl tile. There are many different styles of vinyl flooring; some of these include:

  • Hardwood
  • Stone
  • Modern tile pattern

Vinyl tile also has the option of whether you can grout it. Some also come with a pre-grouted line to make the installation easy. LVT and LVP are durable and require minimal maintenance. Vinyl is available for different applications. While vinyl flooring and laminate are both cheap solutions, vinyl can be the pricier option, especially if you’re looking into luxury vinyl.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is made up of multiple layers.

  1. A water-resistant backing that repels water to ensure moisture doesn’t affect the board structure.
  2. The core, which is HDF (High-Density Fiberboard) which resists water.
  3. The print or design
  4. The coating that will resist scratching, denting, and fading.

Laminate offers different textures, which create a high-end feel, despite its affordability. Like vinyl plank flooring, laminate is available in various colours and styles but is less moisture-resistant. Laminate, on the other hand, is easier to install and maintain.

Which Option Should You Go With?

Your specific needs and preferences determine the choice between vinyl plank flooring and laminate flooring. Vinyl flooring may be the better option if you need a durable, moisture-resistant option. But you may also want to consider laminate flooring if you seek a more affordable hardwood alternative.
